Tools Engineer

Tools, in the game development world, are specialized software applications that are designed to facilitate the work of designers, artists, and programmers. A tools engineer is the individual responsible for creating and maintaining that software for the studio. Game development studios use a number of third-party systems like Maya, Houdini, and the Unreal engine to bring characters and environments to life, but many studios also rely on in-house engineers to develop and maintain proprietary systems that are specifically designed to meet the needs of a particular game.

Musical Director

The musical director is hired during pre-production by the producer and director, and is responsible only for the vocal and instrumental performance of the cast and accompanying band or orchestra. Few musical directors are as well-known as David Letterman’s longtime collaborator Paul Shaffer, but all are integral to the musical texture of the shows they work on.

Assistant Producer

In the video game industry, the assistant producer acts as a facilitator for the development staff, and is responsible for monitoring the logistical concerns of a game’s creation. He or she works under the supervision of the producer and manages lead personnel in programming, art, and design.

Sound Designer

The lineage of the sound designer title can be traced back to Francis Ford Coppola, who granted the title to Walter Murch for his exceptional work in the creation of original sound effects and achievements in sound manipulation for Apocalypse Now. Coppola defined the role of the sound designer as “an individual ultimately responsible for all aspects of a film’s audio track, from the dialogue and sound effects recording to the re-recording (mix) of the final track.”

Director of Publicity

The director of publicity for a record label oversees the functions of the publicity and press relations staff in support of artists signed to the label. He or she is tasked with developing a publicity campaign for the artist through collaboration with the department staff and artist’s management, and assigns a publicist to specific bands to implement and monitor the campaign.

Advertising Art Director

Visual advertising should be eye-catching but is also intended to make an emotional promise to the consumer. The most difficult task of the advertising art director is to interpret the client’s vision as presented in preliminary concept meetings, and return with a composite (“comp”) that accurately expresses the theme of the product and meets with the approval of the client. The tools have changed somewhat over the years, but the process of conceptualization still begins with that mental “a-ha” moment.

Set Designer

Even a minimalist set comprising only a single table and two chairs reflects conscious decision-making, intended to reflect the themes inherent in the story and support the cast on stage without being obtrusive. The set designer takes in the words on the page, the director’s vision, and  the limitations of space, time, and budget, then synthesizes it all into a meaningful environment for the performance.

Master Carpenter

Under the supervision of the set designer and technical director, the master carpenter is ultimately responsible for the construction of all scenic elements of a live production.

Film Sales Agent

Independent filmmakers can spend years coming up with the perfect idea, scraping together the funding to shoot, and finally completing that masterpiece—but the film may be relegated to the shelf if it cannot be sold to exhibitors. Film sales agents represent filmmakers in need of a distribution agreement.

Projection Designer

Projection technology is by no means a recent innovation, but its integration into live theatrical production is very much a burgeoning art form. Designers and directors are just beginning to explore the capacity of projection to be seamlessly intertwined with live action on stage, and manufacturers of the equipment necessary to carry out that task are constantly returning to the artists for guidance on how to further push the boundaries of possibility.
