Sound Designer

The sound designer’s work should go unnoticed by the audience, and yet still subtly affect them. Unlike the composer or performer, whose efforts are meant to be heard, this person aims to create an aural environment that insinuates emotion, rather than insisting.

Skywalker Sound

Skywalker Sound began as a three-man operation: Sprocket Systems, led by George Lucas, Gary Kurtz, and the young Ben Burtt. In 1987, the operation moved to the new Skywalker Ranch with three Academy Awards in tow. It was announced in October 2012 that Walt Disney Company would purchase Lucasfilm for $4 billion.

Audio Lead

Every piece of audio embedded in a game passes through the hands of the audio lead. This person is responsible for compiling and designing sound effects, background score, and other audio assets that create a rich, fully immersive experience for the player.

Sennheiser

When originally formed as Laboratorium Wennebostel by Dr. Fritz Sennheiser, his staff of seven scientists began by making millivolt meters for Siemens. Later the Siemens company would ask Sennheiser to start producing microphones, and in 1947 the small shop housed in an abandoned lab at Hannover Technical University debuted the MD 2 dynamic mic.

Record Plant Recording Studios

When record producer Gary Kellgren left Mayfair Studios to set up his own shop, his impressive roster of clients went with him: The early success of the Record Plant is due in large part to the support of artists like Frank Zappa. Chris Stone supplied the business know-how to the new enterprise, and Revlon heiress Ancky Johnson put up the cash. By the grand opening, the studio was booked three months in advance.

Technical Director

A live production’s technical staff can number dozens or hundreds; to ensure that the lighting designer is not calling focus the same day the deck is being painted, a technical director is in place to coordinate between departments. This person is an artist, a craftsperson, and technician; without a technical director, the production process is more chaos theory than the realization of organic creation.
