2012 Game Career Outlook

When Game Developer Magazine issued their “Career Guide, Fall 2012,” they shared some great insights into what you can expect out of your game career. We were particularly interested in how well the most popular game careers worked out for technicians and artists trying to pay their bills. Consult the chart below to gauge how your current or future career in games is projected to play out, in terms of salary and experience.

Previz Supervisor

Previsualization is a process used in feature filmmaking and television production to plan out complex visual effects sequences during the pre-production phase; this enables the director and cinematographer to see rough animatics of their shots in a fast and inexpensive manner before committing time, crew, and resources to filming.

Previz Artist

A previz artist is a skilled generalist with considerable experience in digital animation and a keen eye for cinematography. He or she is a member of the visual effects team who is responsible for creating previsualization animatics during pre-production. At the request of the director, animatics are used to plan various iterations of a complex scene, providing the director with a rough representation of character blocking, the environment, digital effects, and other cinematic elements.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment

WB Games is a division of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group, under the umbrella of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The company is a publisher and developer of interactive entertainment properties, including games for console, PC, and handheld platforms. Warner Bros. is a division of Time Warner, Inc.

SCE Santa Monica Studio

Best known for developing the God of War franchise, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Santa Monica Studio holds nine awards from The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences as well as British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards in Technical Achievement and Story and Character for God of War 2.

Vigil Games

David Adams, Joe Madureira, Marvin Donald, and Ryan Stefanelli founded Vigil Games in 2005. After hatching a plan to leave their PC game development jobs and open an independent studio to create console games, the group went into intensive garage development and premiered their ideas at E3. Vigil quickly gained interest from THQ to publish the first title, Darksiders.

Gameloft

The Guillemot brothers, founders of Ubisoft, launched Gameloft in 1999. The French game development studio and publisher has more than 200 games to its credit, including the award-winning mobile Assassin’s Creed series.

Telltale Games

Three veterans of the entertainment technology industry, Kevin Bruner, Troy Molander, and Dan Connors, founded Telltale Games in 2004. All are veterans of LucasArts, having worked on such titles as Grim Fandango, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, and Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance.

Lighting Artist

Lighting in video games, as with film, television, and theater, is necessary to establish an atmosphere within the game environment that is consistent with the time and place, as well as the emotional context. Lighting sets the mood for a showdown at high noon in New Austin or a deadly night siege in Raccoon City.

Associate Animation Director

Similar to how a film or theatrical director coaches the performance of actors and blocks the movement of the scene, an animation director working in video game development is responsible for guiding animators to create lively, expressive characters that evoke real emotion and provide the player with a heightened game experience.
