Color Commentary: Naomi Shohan

As the production designer on such visually distinctive films as American BeautyConstantine and I Am Legend, Naomi Shohan’s work affects audiences on many levels, from the emotional to the intellectual.

Mind Over Matter: Jen K. Messer

Abstract ideas rule Jen K. Messer’s working life. As a production designer for the National Geographic series Brain Games, Messer is charged with the not-so-simple task of creating physical props, set design, and set pieces that help experts illustrate complex science concepts.

The Scavengers: Michelle Torres

Today’s television landscape includes more commercials at shorter intervals, while the viewing public’s attention span and patience is shrinking. However, with the advent of DVR technology, brands have been forced to great lengths to capture and keep your attention. More than ever, commercials are produced as short-form films with higher production values and even A-list directors.

Designing Woman: Laura Richarz

Prop Buyer

Picture Warehouse 13 or the expansive storage facility of mysterious artifacts in the Indiana Jones series. Hidden in crates and catalogued on shelves, there are thousands of miscellaneous items that each tells a story. In feature film and television, props are a critical part of storytelling and setting a realistic scene. Like Dr. Jones, the prop buyer is a treasure hunter that combs through those shelves.

Construction Foreman

Scenery is one of the most comprehensive visual elements of a film or television production. Sets establish a time and place but can also become characters in themselves, with great craftsmanship and effort put forth to providing an immersive environment in which the cast plays out the story. Just consider for a moment the iconic places audiences have traveled through scenery, like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise or the untamed and ominous ruins of Kurtz’s Cambodian compound.

Imaginary Forces

Imaginary Forces is a creative studio and production company founded by Chip Houghton, Peter Frankfurt, and Kyle Cooper (Prologue Films). Moviegoing audiences will surely recognize one of the company’s most iconic contributions, the flipbook-style title card that precedes all Marvel Entertainment films.

Set Designer

Audiences don’t usually spend much time wondering if a particular scene of a film or television show was shot on location or created on a sound stage, and that’s the way it should be. Set designers that create elaborate and visually stunning scenery leave an impression on admiring viewers, but the subtle sets that seamlessly create a believable environment inside of a sound stage are noteworthy for holding the suspension of disbelief.

Key Scenic Artist

In film and television production, it is often cumbersome and costly to use authentic materials in set construction. Instead, wood paneling, marble countertops, or titanium alloy bulkheads are replicated and approximated with cheaper stand-ins. With help from the carpenters, scenic artists complete this illusion with the application of faux finishes and expert painting techniques. As highly specialized artists, these members of the paint department focus on disguising one material for another and tricking the camera’s lens.

Art Director

Though art direction has been an integral part of the filmmaking process for more than 100 years, the craft is not well understood—even among those working in the industry. For many years, these artists and their contributions were underappreciated, but more recently, the skill and talent of these professionals have been better recognized through negotiation for prominently displayed credit and the inclusion of the category in popular award shows.
