Mark Hensley: Taming Audio Anarchy

Desk Job: Christopher Holmes

Christopher Holmes never made it to his college graduation ceremony. A graduate of Full Sail University’s class of 2000, Holmes decided on the final day of classes that going cross-country to follow job leads ranked higher than wearing a gown and hearing his name called.

“I had an itch that I needed to go. I can’t really explain why, but I needed to go right then,” he explains. “It was a gut kind of thing.”

In 2007, Herbie Hancock recorded River: The Joni Letters at Avatar. The recording won the Grammy for Album of the Year.

Assistant Mix Engineer

The principle responsibility of the assistant mix engineer is to streamline and simplify the primary mix engineer’s workflow. While the assistant is expected to perform many technical tasks, he or she is mostly essential to maintain organization.

Assistant Mastering Engineer

The assistant mastering engineer serves much like an apprentice—whether formally or informally—to the mastering engineer. He or she is expected to observe more than actually participate in the process. However, the assistant does have a vital role to perform. To ensure that the primary engineer is able to work as efficiently as possible, the assistant is responsible for prepping and organizing sessions.

Purchased by The Jim Henson Company in 1999, the former site of A&M Records is now the Henson Recording Studios. However, despite a music history that stretches back to the 1960s, the studios were born of film legacy.

Mastering Engineer

Producing an album is essentially a four-step process: recording, editing, mixing, and mastering. Mastering refers to the process of refining and transferring the final mix of audio tracks to a data storage device (the master) that will serve as the source for all future duplication; this may be a CD, vinyl record, or digital file.
