Exploring the DGA's Assistant Directors Training Program

As important as schooling is to a future career as a director in films and television, it doesn’t guarantee you a job, or even a place in the Directors Guild of America. Internships are helpful for building skills, but they don’t always pay the bills. The Assistant Directors Training Program helps bridge that gap between receiving your degree and actually becoming a working director.

Post-production Supervisor

Putting the finishing touches on a film or television show is a long and involved process that requires the dedicated efforts of numerous technical and artistic departments, much like principal photography. Just as the director provides leadership and oversight of filming, the post-production supervisor wrangles together the many pieces to complete the project.

Second Unit Director

The second unit of a film is a crew that is responsible for shooting supplementary footage; this includes establishing shots, stunts, inserts, and cutaways. This crew is separate from the first unit, which is the team that films scenes with the leading cast. When a series of shots are deemed too expensive, dangerous, or time-consuming for the first unit to accomplish, the second unit director leads his or her team to capture the necessary scenes.
