What to Expect

The 2K label operates several internal development studios, including Visual Concepts, Firaxis Games, Irrational Games, 2K Marin, and Cat Daddy Games. Additionally, international studios exist in the Czech Republic, Australia, and China. The company is headquartered in Novato, Calif., with additional facilities in the United Kingdom and Canada.

2K Games specializes in first-person shooters, action, and role-playing titles for core gamers. In 2007, BioShock was honored with the Game of the Year award. 2K Sports creates titles that leverage NBA, MLB, and NHL licenses, including the best-selling franchise NBA 2K. At 2K Play, developers concentrate on casual games and family entertainment, such as Carnival Games, Comedy Central’s Indecision Game, and titles based on popular Nickelodeon Nicktoons and Dora the Explorer.

Within the publishing arm of 2K, located in Novato, employment opportunities exist for entry-level administrative and marketing personnel, as well as senior producers. Development positions in art, programming, design, and animation are available within the internal development studios, and experience requirements vary based on the role. Most junior positions require a relevant college degree and professional experience on at least one shipped title. However, entry-level roles for quality assurance testers are offered when available. Candidates may apply online and through email, including a demo reel or sample code when applicable.

Each internal studio makes hiring decisions based on unique criteria. Depending on the production pipeline and current development slate, each facility reviews applications in search of the right fit to the staff and the technical or artistic needs of the product. An application rejected from one studio may find greater favor with another. Keep in mind; if you are interested in applying for positions within multiple studios, you must submit individual résumés.

It is important to note the individual benefits and perks will vary somewhat from one studio to the next. In-office parties, themed activity days, and staff outings are common occurrences. Likewise, the culture inside the studio is unique to that team. Before applying, take the time to investigate the games that facility has developed and watch video interviews with senior developers. Those resources can be helpful in offering a greater perspective on whether or not you could see yourself fitting in with the staff. If you land the interview, ask questions concerning the management philosophy; this shows your sincere interest in the position, as well as the company.
