What to Expect

Formerly known as Columbia Broadcasting Systems and tracing its roots to the United Independent Broadcasters Inc. bought by William S. Paley in 1928, the current incarnation of CBS Corporation was born in 2006 out of a split between the company and Viacom, forming two separate, publicly traded entities. Today, CBS retains control of all broadcast television properties under the CBS network and CW, as well as Showtime. Other divisions of CBS include CBS Films (The Woman in Black), original television production and distribution, CBS studios, Simon & Shuster publishing, home entertainment, radio, and other related operations.

CBS Corporation is headquartered in New York City, home to the CBS Broadcast Center. Within the Manhattan studios that occupy nearly a full city block, CBS tapes and conducts live programming for CBS News, CBS Sports, and houses WCBS-TV, a local affiliate. BET’s 106 & Park also uses the facilities, along with Inside Edition. Also in New York, CBS operates the Ed Sullivan Theater, where The Late Show with David Letterman has been produced since 1993. On the West Coast, CBS Studio Center (Studio City, California) consists of 18 sound stages on 40 acres. On site, the studio offers just about any production resource necessary for film and television, including a scenic shop, special effects, lighting, and grip facilities.

Across the United Sates, CBS owns several local affiliate stations, as well as outdoor advertising divisions, radio stations, and other businesses. Employment opportunities are available across a wide variety of operational areas, including production, design, interactive media, creative development, marketing, promotions, broadcasting, and editorial. Those interested in current available positions can review openings through the CBS corporation website.

Internships are available for college students in their junior or senior years and are offered during the spring, summer, and fall semesters. Applicants must provide a cover letter and résumé, as well as two letters of recommendation, college transcript, and a writing sample. Internships are for college credit and unpaid. Recent graduates may qualify for limited apprenticeship programs within one of a number of entertainment and media fields within CBS Corporation. All academic and early career programs are listed on the company’s website in the career section.
