What to Expect

As a music publisher, EMI licenses songs for advertising, film, television, merchandising, video games, and other uses. Songwriters who sign over all or a percentage of their publishing rights to EMI will find that the publisher aggressively markets their songs and pursues diverse avenues through which to monetize that license. In 2009, the company was awarded its 12th straight Billboard Publisher of the Year Award. 

EMI employs individuals across a wide array of departments, including artist development, film and television sales, copyright, marketing, accounting, public relations, and more. The most coveted positions are those in A&R, whose job it is to visit clubs and scout new talent, but opportunities also exist for marketing representatives, royalty administrators, music supervisors, and licensing administrators, among others. Entry-level roles include coordinator of music resources, artist relations assistant, and marketing coordinator. Internships are available in the creative department as well as in other divisions, and are based on college credit. Summer internships require a minimum of 16 hours per week. Full-time programs are available during the fall and spring semesters. Candidates are evaluated based on a résumé and cover letter, and a demonstration of skill or strong interest in the music business.

Entry-level employment requires at least a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent professional experience. For mid-level and senior positions, like A&R executive or director of public relations, a bachelor’s degree and at least five years of music industry experience is preferred. Assistant and coordinator positions can expect to earn in the range of $25,000 to $50,000, depending on their experience and the department they work in, while managers and mid-level employees can make a base salary of $47,000 to $62,000 per year. Pay is based on demonstrated skill, education, and previous work history.
