What to Expect

High Moon Studios occupies a 50,000-square-foot facility in the Carlsbad area of San Diego County in southern California. The company has occupied that space, which once belonged to a Sega developer, since 2002. Taking advantage of the opportunity to build-to-suit, High Moon outfitted the industrial, warehouse-like space in a manner that embraced the studio’s west coast location. The Wave is a conference room built out of blue, undulating walls that represent the tides that break on the San Diego shores. The Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles inspired a second conference room. Frank Gehry’s architectural masterpiece is an unmistakable landmark of the L.A. area. Oh yeah, and they have a half-pipe. Why not?

The interior design of the facility is one of both form and function; the studio brass wanted an environment that was conducive to productivity, but also relaxing and inviting. A peek around the corners and corridors of the developer’s workspaces will reveal numerous surfboard racks. Employees are encouraged to break away for a couple hours and refresh by catching waves and rays. It is a belief held by most in the game industry that you’ve got to let your developers have fun to make fun. It is also a well-known fact that developers need to be well fed. Breakfast and lunch are prepared daily in the dining area.

A game company is in business to make money, so the workday cannot be all surfing and chowing down. High Moon has invested considerably in creating a state-of-the-art studio, including dedicated areas for cinematic production, audio recording and mixing, Foley recording, video editing, and even a focus group/playtesting room. The company will occasionally invite gamers to visit the studio to playtest games that are in various stages of development. Inside a room equipped with PCs and consoles, players pick apart the games while designers and analysts observe them through a two-way mirror, embedded microphones, and a hidden camera.

Those interested in applying for positions within High Moon Studios can search through current job listings by visiting the company’s official website.
