Legacy Effects was formed in 2008 out of Stan Winston Studios, after the passing of Academy Award–winning special effects master Stan Winston. Shane Mahan, John Rosengrant, Lindsay MacGowan, and Alan Scott partnered to preserve the memory of their late mentor and continue his legacy of stunning special effects.

What to Expect

Stan Winston Studios was responsible for some of the most memorable creatures, makeup, and animatronics in the history of motion pictures; the Terminator films, Aliens, Edward Scissorhands, the Jurassic Park series, and A.I. are just a few examples of the work produced under the direction of Stan Winston. Since 2008, as the newly reorganized Legacy Effects, the studio has continued to innovate and inspire with work on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Terminator Salvation, Avatar, Iron Man 2, and Shutter Island. Legacy Effects also created the first live-action Halo characters and creatures for the Halo 3: ODST commercial, and is responsible (for better or worse) for the Aflac duck, among several other popular commercial critters.

Legacy Effects employs artists and craftspeople in numerous specialties that take a design from concept art to final product; this includes sculptors, painters, mold-makers, fabricators, hair technicians, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and more. The studio may employ more than 120 people during a production cycle, depending on the workload. To keep the production volume high, Legacy Effects has been aggressively expanding in commercials, television series (Grey’s Anatomy), and live production, while still serving the motion picture industry. In addition to Hollywood blockbusters Legacy Effects has also contributed to indie films, the German sci-fi horror flick Pandorum, and the Bollywood production Endhiran.
