What to Expect

Founded by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin in 1984, Naughty Dog became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Computer Entertainment in 2001. Since then, the Santa Monica studio has proven to be a huge force in the gaming industry, having successfully developed three critically acclaimed and commercially popular franchises: Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter, and Uncharted.

Naughty Dog employs about 100 people, depending on current development needs, and one French bulldog named Pogo. The current co-presidents of the company have maintained an informal internal structure among the staff, holding on to the small studio mentality that has made the company agile and innovative. Among all development teams, the staff supports an open exchange of ideas, where individuals at all levels are free to express ideas, allowing the best creative concepts to rise to the top. The process at Naughty Dog is a highly organic one, as projects go through intense iteration toward a final product. Designers, artists, and programmers learn from each other and contribute outside of their core expertise to better the game, rather than keeping their heads down and confined to one development area. Have no doubt, though, strict deadlines and high expectations motivate the staff to work efficiently and diligently, but for those who are passionate about their jobs, the stress and pressure are well worth it.

Naturally, crunch time needs a pressure valve. In the studio, employees are encouraged to find the occasional distraction in taking in-house yoga classes or playing on basketball, foosball, or ping-pong. To continue to grow the family feel of the team, the Naughty Dog pack often arranges group outings and recreational events. As a subsidiary of Sony, employees are granted a few extra perks, like Sony Computer Entertainment freebies, discounts on Sony electronics, music, and movie screenings on the Sony Pictures studio lots.

Those interested in career opportunities with Naughty Dog can find a list of current job openings by visiting the company’s official website. The studio does allow potential candidates to inquire via email with a resume and portfolio if the specific role you are looking for is not listed on the website. The company will consider all qualified candidates for future positions.
