Since Rockstar Games’ inception, they have been best known for their ultraviolent, highly interactive game titles, most notably the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Rockstar is based in New York City, with 10 studios across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
What to Expect
A stellar portfolio is the most powerful impression you can make on the people at Rockstar. Artists need to present polished, clean work that exemplifies their strengths. It is important to keep in mind the aesthetic of the titles on Rockstar’s roster. If you want to work with the artists who created Grand Theft Auto, you should load your reel with realistic art, human characters, and real-life environments. Creature and fantasy art is great for some companies, but it isn’t going to prove to Rockstar that you understand their games or would be a good fit in their art department. Keep your portfolio tight; only exhibit your best work, tailored specifically to Rockstar’s needs.
Portfolios may only be given 10 to 15 seconds of review from a hiring manager, so you need to put your best foot forward from the start. Don’t hide the good stuff at the end. Also keep in mind that you can get points for improvement. If you sent in a portfolio six months ago with no luck, enhance your reel; add the best of the new projects you have been working on. The recruiters will pull your previous submissions and take into account your level of improvement and speed at which you are learning new skills. Persistence pays off, and it shows you are motivated and dedicated.
