Simple things can impress a Sony recruiter; put your portfolio online, write a persuasive cover letter, and tailor your reel to display examples of your work that closely resemble the style and aesthetic of Sony’s current game titles. Most important, don’t abandon your application once it has been sent. Keep in touch; follow up with the recruiter. The best way to stand out is to maintain a positive professional relationship with the person reviewing your work. There may not have been a position available when you first sent off your résumé, but six months later your dream job could open up. Unless you keep in touch, Sony isn’t going to remember you. A short email that mentions your recent projects every couple of months is enough to keep your name fresh in the recruiter’s mind.

When you do get the interview, be prepared to prove yourself all over again. If you make the first cut, artists can expect to be given an art test. Programmers will be quizzed on their technical skills and software experience. Sony uses Maya, Mental Ray, and Z-Brush, and prefers experience in XML, PERL, and C++. This is where any puffery on your résumé will become obvious, so don’t embellish. It’s OK to admit you don’t know something.
