What to Expect
Trion World’s founders departed from their former employers at Electronic Arts and NCSoft with the mission of “fundamentally revolutionizing the way games are created, played, and distributed.” After five years in development, Trion released RIFT in March 2011, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. The game was critically well received and took home awards for Best New Online Game and Best Online Technology at the 2011 Game Developers Conference. By August of that year, more than 1 million gamers, having generated revenue of $100 million, had played RIFT. Not bad for a first attempt. In 2012, Trion Worlds and Syfy announced they would partner to simultaneously deliver DEFIANCE, an integrated MMO multi-platform shooter, and accompanying live-action television series.
Headquartered in Redwood Shores, Calif., Trion Worlds operates two additional domestic studios and a London office. Redwood Shores is home to the RIFT development team, Austin is home to the server and publishing technology crew, and San Diego is where first-party development of DEFIANCE takes place, in addition to third-party dev of End of Nations with Petroglyph. Throughout the company, employment opportunities exist in the areas of design, art, animation, engineering, localization, quality assurance, and community management, among others. Applicants interested in reviewing current available roles can find information on Trion’s official website and apply online.
A bachelor’s degree in an area relevant to the position you are applying for is necessary. All candidates, regardless of specialty, should have experience in the MMO genre, with technical skills applicable to both PC and console platforms. In submitting your portfolio or design reel, consider carefully the style of Trion World’s existing titles. Demonstrating your personal aesthetic is useful, but hiring managers need to see that you can accomplish the established look of the existing worlds in the Trion Universe.
