What to Expect
Best known as a Broadway touring company, Work Light Productions’ most recent tours include Green Day’s American Idiot, Tony Award-winning musical In The Heights, Mamma Mia!, and Avenue Q. Additionally, Work Light produces theatrical entertainment for young audiences that have included the Tony Award-nominated Frog and Toad, The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, and Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach.
Employment opportunities on touring productions are offered on a contract basis per show, and applicants can apply via e-mail. Candidates with prior touring experience are preferred, and significant employment history in theatrical productions and live entertainment is necessary. Technical roles hired include those in lighting, audio, rigging, props, costuming, and others. Management roles such as company manager and stage manager are also available.
Work Light Productions’ shows are known as bus and truck tours, meaning that the cast and crew travel together via chartered buses from one show to the next, unloading semi trucks and installing the show at each new venue. Tour lengths will vary from one production to the next, depending on the number of dates in each leg of the tour and the number of shows performed in each city. It is common to pull shifts as long as 10, 12, or even 20 hours. In a single day, a show’s production crew may load in a show, hang the rig and install scenery, perform the show, and then load out before setting back out on the road for a new city. Touring is a grueling way of life that inevitably carries with it long days, little sleep, and hard work. However, for those set on a career in live production, it is an invaluable learning experience and right of passage.
